Synopsis
It’s July 1995. Newly weds April and Eddie are on their way to their honeymoon when Eddie takes a wrong turn on to Atticus Line. While trying to figure out where they are, they notice a hitchhiker walking down the road. The couple pick her up, only to discover she is bleeding profusely and they are being chased down by a large truck.
The hitchhiker dies at the local hospital and April and Eddie are the prime suspects. The couple spend what should have been their honeymoon fighting the accusations and trying to solve the mystery of murders along Atticus Line, starting in the 70s. They quickly realize this is more complicated than a serial killer.
In order to solve the mystery, they must find the killer of the first girl who haunts the road. In doing so, their own pasts are brought back to haunt them. Their marriage is tested before it’s barely begun and Eddie is faced with a major identity crisis.
My Thoughts
This book had me from the start. I couldn’t put it down. The characters are complex and well written. Even the secondary characters had layers that made them feel real. The drama and mystery kept me guessing until the very end. The writing had a good pace. It was fast enough to not be boring, but slow enough to keep you hooked.
I had a couple spots where the descriptions kind of dragged on, but it wasn’t too bad. If you’re a speed reader, you’re not going to miss too much detail.
The ending was satisfying and wrapped everything up nicely. I wasn’t left with any questions. While the ending is happy, it’s clear the trauma of the experience will stay with all characters involved for a while.
